James Girvin concentrates his practice in the areas of Education Law, Private and Public Sector Labor and Employment Law, and Litigation. He is experienced in collective bargaining, mediation, fact finding, arbitration, improper practice and unfair labor practice proceedings, and other labor relations matters. He also has extensive experience in employee and student discipline proceedings, unemployment and Workers' Compensation hearings, administrative hearings, and state and federal court proceedings. Mr. Girvin is a frequent speaker on labor and employment matters and regularly addresses the New York State Association of Towns, the New York State Personnel Association, the Association of School Business Officials, and the Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES.
He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. District Court, Northern District, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, U.S. Court of Military Appeals and in New York and Massachusetts.
A graduate of Siena College and Albany Law School of Union University, Mr. Girvin was also a Captain in the U.S. Army and served in the Judge Advocate General's Corps as trial defense counsel and appellate defense counsel.
He is a member of the board of directors of the Albany Sports Foundation and LaSalle Institute and a trustee of the Siena College Alumni Association Scholarship Fund and the Siena College Board of Associate Trustees. He has also served as an adjunct instructor of business law.
Due to his expertise in education, Mr. Girvin was chosen as a member of the transition team for Governor George E. Pataki. He has also been named in Who's Who in American Law (Millennium Edition) and was named a "Super Lawyer" in the New York State 2008 Upstate Edition of Super Lawyers.
